Requesting Permission to Use AI

This page is for students in my postgraduate classes (taught courses), undergraduate seminar and postgraduate seminar who wish to request permission to use AI or computer-based language checking tools in their report/thesis writing. However, please note that, in principle, I prefer human proofreading checks (you may ask me for help in English) because it better allows you to learn from your mistakes and improve your language ability.

Students in my postgraduate classes (contents tourism in the spring, the history issue in the autumn) and undergraduate seminar are reminded that proofreading of your report/thesis is not mandatory. You are assessed on content, not English/Japanese ability. However, MA theses and PhD theses must be proofread before submission for examination (and we will discuss proofreading requirements during your supervisions).

The procedure is as follows:

1) Complete your draft (the whole report/thesis, or a part of it) without using any AI tool or proofreading service.

2) When the draft is ready for proofreading (English/Japanese checks), send the following email to me (copy and paste it all please, including the pledge) along with the file you want checked:

Address: pseaton62 at tufs.ac.jp

Dear Professor Seaton,

My name is [NAME] and I am taking your course [COURSE].

I have finished my draft and request permission for it to be proofread using AI. Please find attached the document containing my completed draft (not yet proofread). I pledge that AI has not been used at all in the writing of the thesis according to your AI policy. I also pledge that the AI checks are only to correct my English/Japanese and not to adjust the content.

I understand that the penalty for lying about AI use is that I will not receive credits for this term and will be reported to the university for academic misconduct (for which the penalty is the annulment of all grades for the semester and possibly further action).

I await your mail giving permission to do AI checks.

Yours, [NAME]

3) You will receive an email confirming permission. Do the checks using AI.

4) When the English/Japanese checks are completed, send the revised version of your draft so that it may be checked against the original.
