New page: Dual degrees

I have added a new page outlining the dual degrees that I have negotiated for the university with the University of Central Lancashire and University of Melbourne. This is an increasingly important part of my job since I became head of the International Education Support Office in April 2023.

New page: Published theses

I have set up a new page listing my undergraduate students who have successfully converted their graduation theses into published articles. The theses were excellent to begin with, but have subsequently gone through a refereeing process to be accepted as publishable research. There are two main aims for me of this new project:

1) I hope this inspires all my students to do their very best, and gives them additional motivation to produce a top quality graduation thesis.

2) Not all people producing excellent research choose to stay in academia. Much excellent research gets “lost” because people leave to pursue other paths in life. This way, thesis research that will benefit the broader academic community can still be part of the academic literature.

New website: War Memory Tourism

I have created a new website called War Memory Tourism. This website is a research and teaching resource that is designed as an online appendix for my various research projects and an interactive reading list for my students. Do check it out!

Graduation!

Congratulations to the 21 BA students and 2 MA students who graduated on 23 March after completing their theses under my supervision. All the best in whatever comes next …!

New Academic Year

The new academic year begins amidst the corona virus pandemic. Congratulations to the students who have joined the School of Japan Studies, and also to my three new postgraduate students in the International Japan Course (one student moving from research student to a PhD programme, one student entering the MA programme, and one student coming as a research student).

My courses this term are completely online until the corona virus situation stabilizes. I hope that all our students, and people everywhere, will stay safe and well as the world works to overcome this pandemic and accompanying economic crisis.
